Cognitive Neuroscience- Second Edition

4 stars (Not for those without background) - This book is not intended for the general reader, reader with cellular neuroscience background, but has a target audience of advanced undergraduate or graduate level students with relevant background. Also would be useful for the psychology professional without specific or with dated cognitive neuroscience background, or others intending a research or applied clinical career in the area. Appropriate background would necessarily be at least an undergraduate course in cognitive psychology, with additional help provided by biological psychology or a medical professional in neurology. Discussions of principles and mechanisms are at a "functional machinery" level and thus would not make sense to those without some previous training in those principles. It just isn't a basic text, thus, no glossary of basic terms is included. Yes, the material is both abstract and complex, but so is brain function, and we are just beginning to learn. There are very, very few textbooks that survey this area which only became a separate field of study sometime around 1986. Other reading material in the field consists entirely of professional level chapters in compiled and edited texts. The only other broad survey text that I know of is Marie Banich's book on the related area of Cognitive Neuropsychology. 3 stars (Additions to this book) - This book is more like a bunch of journals bound together. The authors introduce new words without previous qualifications. For example, in the chapter of binocular vision, they added spatial normalization and various other models, without telling what exactly they are! Also when I tried to find these terms in relatively basic texts I was unable to find them. Same was the case with internet. It is definitly for advanced learner. (I am doing PhD in neuroscience and still finding it very difficult)To clarify zillions of issue I have to sit with my mentor. Although she is very nice but still the discussion needs a...

Psychology- Sixth Edition

3 stars (BEWARE: paperback edition and hardcover are different books!) - Actually I'm reviewing the paperback edition; Amazon has a bug in this one. I wanted to buy the "text book" of Psychology so I checked the hardcover, there in the tab "other editions" I noticed a paperback edition (which was $100 cheaper) so i followed the link, after reading the reviews and "looking inside the book" I decided to buy the paperback edition (the reviews and the "look inside the book" were supposedly for the paperback edition). The problem was when I received the book... it wasn't the book but the "study guide" (which is worthless without the book) I went back to Amazon and checked carefully and alas when I went to the paperback edition there is a slight change in the title (which one doesn't check again because it's supposed to be the same book) but the reviews and everything else is the same which is VERY misleading. I already sent them an e-mail asking them to change this, but for the meantime be careful. P.S: I rated with 3 stars because I had to put something I'll fix it when I get the hardcover edition and I can actually use it. 5 stars (Text for Honors Introductory Psychology) - I've used the text for my honors section of Psych 101 and as a source for lecture material in my other sections. IMHO, this the the best textbook for Intro Psych that I have ever come across in terms of the depth of material presented. It is, however, probably too difficult for the large lecture hall sections or sections taught entirely by graduate students. For these sections I would recommend David Myers' textbook. Much more student-friendly, and still an excellent source of information. Fridlund, et al., is still the gold standard. 5 stars (Outstanding, comprehensive "intro." book.) - This introduction text represents a "tour de force" in dealing with a complex subject. Psychology is divided into 5 sections dealing with Action, Cognition, Social Behavior, Development, and Indivi...

Psychological Science- Mind- Brain- and Behavior

5 stars (Alternative to Hardcover - Ebook) - As an alternative to the Hardcover edition, please consider the eBook (PDF Version) which is split into Part I and Part II. Pricing for the eBook versions is considerably less than the hardcover. Search for "Psychological Science: Mind, Brain, and Behavior" in the toolbox, or directly to ASIN B0002VC6SG and B0002VC6SQ for the eBook versions. 5 stars (A Complete Introduction) - This book is very complete introduction to psychology. It has clear diagrams and is written well. A good textbook to a more complete understanding of the basis of psychology. Woot. ...

Abnormal Psychology- Fourth Edition W-CD

5 stars (2nd Edition ISBN # 0393956962 Is Hardcover, Not Cloth) - This is an excellent, perhaps the best, Abnormal Psychology Textbook. You can save over $100 by going with this older edition. It is not too different than the current edition and can easily be updated. Amazon Marketplace is currently offering the 2nd edition as low as 53 cents. This is an outstanding bargain. 4 stars (Organized with interesting case studies. Easy reading.) - The text in paperback form was quite inexpensive. The book was organized into easily digestible chapters with insightful DSM classifications. The chapter on sexual disorders was quite explicit. Our instructor skipped it in lecture. ...

The Story of the World- Activity Book One- Ancient Times- Second Edition

5 stars (Must have!) - I re-visited the idea of getting the activity book when my friend had all these amazing project ideas, coloring pages and activity pages--all from the activity workbook. It's tremendous, thorough, and does a lot of research and thinking for you. It's a fabulous extension of the Story of the World books. 5 stars (A great compliment) - We are 4 weeks into enjoying Story of the World Book 1 and have found the activity book to be a great complement. The suggested activities for each chapter make the text come alive. The group of coloring pages alternates between informative (but not overwhelming) maps and coloring pages appropriate to the text. I was especially pleased to coincidently (?) see a full color illustration in one of my mother-in-law's books on ancient Egypt that matched my daughter's coloring page version. We might have done the narrative retelling on our own, but having the narration guidelines helps. I like the activity book and don't know what we'd do without it! 4 stars (Great Story) - This is a great introduction to Western Civ. for children. It contains fictional stories, as well as information about people and places from this time period. ...

Deep Survival- Who Lives- Who Dies- and Why

3 stars (Deep Survival, by Lawrence Gonzalis) - Entertaining, but disappointing book. Survival based more on pure luck than "know how". 4 stars (Useful, Often Fascinating, Sometimes Meandering) - Deep Survival can often be quite an interesting journey, although occasionally, like many of the hikers in the true life stories within, it gets a little lost and goes in circles. Laurence Gonzales has made a nice selection of survival tales and presents them in a very useful and illustrative manner. The author shoehorns himself in a little too much (particularly as humility is supposed to be one of the main virtues possessed by a survivor.) These true tales make a nice balance and counterpoint to much of the fascinating scientific research. The book does ignore anything that does not help its thesis so luck is downplayed as is the fact that non-survivors, who tales cannot be told, may often experience and exhibit the same charateristics as survivors, such as a sense of humour, but time was never on their side. Still, it makes for great reading and, despite the author's final insistence that survivors are born, may offer many useful tips for mental attitude adjustments during a hike or a climb gone wrong. 2 stars (Very slow in getting to the point) - I recommend against this book. It is extremely slow. If I need to fall asleep, I start reading this book again. The book has potential, but never lives up to it. I feel like writing about how the author could've or should've, but why waste my time and yours. Oh, and how old is this guy to keep writing about how great his daddy is. . . . ...

Moneyball- The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

5 stars (About so much more than baseball!) - Don't judge a book by its cover. Ostensibly the title and cover of this book would lead you to conclude that this book is all about baseball. It isn't. When I was handed this book I was expecting a dreary George Will book about the symmetry of motion in baseball or how baseball is the smart man's sport. My expectations were very low. The first few pages quickly put that concern to rest. This is a page-turner that you will not put down. Have you ever wondered how the Oakland A's with a team that looks so unlike other major league teams can be a consistent winner? The A's General Manager Billy Beane found market inefficiencies and effectively exploited them. He recognized that other teams religiously used subjective measures and the wrong statistical measures in evaluating a player's worth to the team. Billy Beane found the right measures. And, he recognized that the measures being used by every other team inflated player's salaries not because they contributed to the team's bottom line but because they looked the part or their stats looked good on paper. He looked for talent where others were simply not looking and he found it. This allowed him to field a winning team for far less than others. He developed a strategy to exploit the system by seeking out players not deemed worthy by conventional measures. For instance, short stocky players did not fit the image of a baseball player. Because of their smaller strike zone they walk more frequently, meaning they get on base more often. While other teams were looking at batting average or RBIs, Billy Beane was using statistical measure such as on-base percentage to measure a player's contribution to a winning. He focused on what's important. Billy Beane recognized that using the traditional measures of a play's worth and the scout's reliance upon subject measures didn't match up with what really matter to winning. He leveraged this market inefficiency to bui...

Coach- Lessons on the Game of Life

1 stars (Good idea didn't translate into a book) - I like the idea that Michael Lewis wrote this book/article to defend a man whose coaching techniques are clearly out of style in todays world of my child this and my child that. Having said that I did not like this book: 1) the writing was chopping and hard to follow at times. i had to re-read many sentences to understand lewis' point. 2) the story lacked the depth of lewis' other wonderful books - where's the who/why/what that lewis used to moneyball (and others) educational - i wanted the story behind the story. 3) who were all the pictures of? i found them distracting... i'll continue to read lewis' books bu thope the next one is better 4 stars (Target Audience Young Adults) - I differ with previous reviews lamenting the brevity of the book. Obviously, adults reading the book were thinking in terms of adults. I read the book thinking about my 12-year old grandson and felt it was a perfect book to send him at this stage in his life. This is exactly the type of book you would want to send your grandchildren or have your own children read. It sends a powerful message and being written by someone having been coached by this person at the age of 13 makes it even more valid. It may be short, but that's the beauty of it. It keeps your interest, gets the point across and leaves you wishing for more or better yet, offers the opportunity for discussion with young adults. 5 stars (Will leave you wanting this coach for your children!) - MONEYBALL by Michael Lewis was one of the best baseball books that I have ever read . . . so when I saw the author had another book out, COACH, I made it a point to get and read that one too . . . and I wasn't disappointed, though it is radically different from his earlier effort. MONEYBALL dealt with the economics of professional baseball as it is played today . . . COACH is the story of the author's coach when he was in high school who now--because he hasn't changed his app...

The Last Coach- A Life of Paul -Bear- Bryant

5 stars (THE LAST COACH - THE END OF AN ERA) - Okay, I'm only half way through this book, but I have to say that this is truly one of the best books I have ever read. It's a funny feeling you get when you read this book. As a man, I don't know if I respect Paul Bryant more or less (as a coach, no one compares). What I do know is that I have learned a lot. I love the game of college football, and I long for the days of men like The Bear. 5 stars (researcher par excellance) - Allen Barra is the finest researcher author in the area of sports books. His ability to delve into Bryant's character and his coaching career speaks volumes on his researching ability. Allen has an interesting writing style that captures the readers attention, and makes the book that much more enjoyable. As a fellow historian/researcher and former college football coach I highly recommend this book. 5 stars (An American hero) - It's hard to believe, but it took more than twenty years after Bear Bryant's death to produce a book worthy of a great American hero. Barra has accurately summed up Bryant's greatness as well as his shortcomings and gives an honest objective look at both. Nitpickers with grudges can criticize all they like, but this book will stand up over the years. Paul Hornung was indeed the most sought after football player to come out of Kentucky in his senior year; I know, I was there, and Barra tells the story of his unsuccesful recrutiment by Coach Bryant with total accuracy. Alan Page was indeed the first black starter on the Notre Dame football player, a fact recorded in many places. As for Coach Bryant's drinking, the subject is handled with fairness and taste. Anyone who doesn't approve of Bryant's drinking would be well advised to remember Lincoln's reply when he was told that General Grant drank; every football coach in the country should be given a case of whatever Bryant liked. ...
