Quote, "Tobin and me, the two of us, went down to Coney one day, for there was four dollars between us, and Tobin had need of distractions. 5 stars (Oh, if only everyone would practice the Four Agreements!) - As said in the above title, if everyone would practice the Four Agreements so many misunderstandings, resentments and dramas would be avoided in each others life, a book that every individual should read, i have my copy in my purse, just to be reminded of the Four Agreements when i have a challenging day. 5 stars (Changed my Life) - This book is AWESOME. I use the lessons I learned from this author all the time in my everyday life. It is a fast, easy, and fun read, and will help to keep you sane! 5 stars (A MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!) - By analyzing each agreement, and applying them to your life...you understand the power you have to change your reality. Gain the courage to change your life perspective...this book will not dissapoint those in search of a new beginning ... 5 stars (The best book for chem majors) - After one term of having this book, I decided to become a chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realize the complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.) If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use. If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, it doesn't just string you along and give you the basics... it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what is actually happening in each reaction. Product yields for many reactions are included, and this is quite useful. The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy" (they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone", for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".) I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets. True, the problems in each chapter are not always good. If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's. But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity. 5 stars (I Love Vollhardt) - After perusing several other texts at different colleges, I have come to the conclusion that the Vollhardt book is indeed a well done text. Although more examples would have been nice, I feel that the reactions are done in a straightforward manner and the Chemical Highlights provided are fantastically interesting. The Via... 5 stars (good condition and speedy delivery) - item arrived in 2 days and was in perfect condition. completely satisfied. would recommend to others! 2 stars (Way too expensive for a paperback) - Attractive book but not a good value. All the information is available for free on the internet where it is periodically updated and can be referenced for free without wearing out. 5 stars (Astronomy Text Book) - Text book arrived in excellent condition (brand spankin' new) and in a timely manner (about 3 business days). 3 stars (Yes, but with restrictions) - This is an excellent book that uses illuminating diagrams and examples to explain fundamental concepts. It is by no means, however, an easy reader. To understand the concepts you must read the chapters and do the problems at least 3 to 4 times. (if not more). I worked very hard in orgo, which is one of the reasons why I did well in it. The only reason that kept this rating from being higher, was the solutions manual and the chapter on stereochemistry. The solutions manual is very selective in it's explanations. The solutions to the problems are not explained in a way that everyone can understand it. A solutions manual should always include detailed explanations of every problem, and this solutions manual certainly doesn't do that. Then, on the flip side, if you thorougly understand the chapter before attempting the problems at the end of each chapter, then the solutions manual is an excellent guide. Chapter 5, the stereochemistry chapter, at least all of it, except section 5.19, is extremely poorly written. Stereochemistry is a very tough and important subject, and although the chapter was 50 pages long, it was written very inadequately with examples that don't exemplify simple concepts. Get a model set to learn stereochem, I finally learned at the end of Ochem 2, but that was because I finally understood the basics, and understood that it was extremely easy. Overall, this book is not for someone that doesn't have an interest in ochem, but for someone that takes passion with the subject. I never went to class, but i loved the subject, so the book, for me was excellent. If you love chemistry-BUY THIS BOOK. 5 stars (One of the best available) - This is one of the best sophomore level o-chem text available. The explanation is clear and the writing style is straight-forward. The organization of the topics is somewhat different from the traditional functional group approach. This helps students to apply what they le... 3 stars (Adequate treatment of mental disorders, but lacks depth) - This text provides interesting descriptions of mental disorders. However, it often gives only a fleeting consideration of etiological factors, focusing instead on the regurgitation of the DSM criteria of such disorders. In other words, the text is oriented towards diagnostic criteria rather than theory and etiology. The authors attempt to justify this approach by repeatedly claiming that "little is known about the causes many of the disorders categorized by the DSM". Epistemological limitations aside, however, it seems that the authors would have done well to spend more time addressing hypotheses and theories of etiology, rather than repeatedly elaborating upon the self-explanatory DSM criteria. ... 5 stars (Human Learning) - This is an amazingly well written text. Ms Ormrod actually practices what she preaches, so the book is organised as an exemplar of how to help students learn. I bought the book as an optional text for a Masters in Education, then I sat up one night to check it out. It became compulsive reading, very hard to put down. It gives a broad overview of Educational Psychology thinking over a wide period of time, and encapsulates it. It is full of useful references. Many of my colleagues have borrowed this book for various courses and for course development for educational projects. 4 stars (This is a good practical reference book for teachers.) - Human learning gives a good basic understanding of learning theory for teachers and others who are interested in educational psychology. There are some very good examples for all theories discussed. The book jumps around a bit and some of the explanations are too technical. ... 5 stars (timeless) - The Elements of Style is one of the most important books that I own. Although I'm out of college, I refer to it again and again. Even if I'm not correcting grammar or punctuation, I'll still open the book to see what beautiful writing looks like. The writing is so darn clear that I often joke, "If God wanted someone to teach Jesus how to write, God would have hired Strunk and White." The last chapter deals with writing and how to craft one's own voice. This is valuable for everyone, and although Elements isn't a "how to" book on fiction writing, I've found S&W's advice to be sound while working on novels and short stories. Keep this book in your coat pocket. Study it at red lights or on the subway. This book is timeless. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie." 4 stars (A Classic) - It's funny, when I was studying creative writing with Frank McCourt, there was no mention of this book in his classroom. And in my conversations with Neil Strauss, "Style" himself never once brought up this book on Style. Who is it, then, that reads this little manual? Academics? Everything it says is important, but the most imporant aspect of great writing is clear and engaging communication. You can read this book, but you might do better to read the best writers. McCourt, Strauss, Hemingway, Hunter S. Thompson, E.L. Doctrow, Tom Wolfe -- now there's a syllabus for learning the elements of Style. 5 stars (Great! There is nothing else to be said about this book) - This is a short book that deserves a short review: buy it, read it, trust it. You will write better after doing what it says you should do. Your text will be shorter too, which makes it better yet. ... 5 stars (Best Chemistry Book Ever!) - I've taken AP Chemistry in high school, and took chemistry again in college, so I am familiar with a few chemistry texts. This book astounded me. It was much simpler, more organized, and was full of helpful illustrations, graphs, etc. It's one of the best science texts I've ever used. 4 stars (Chemistry, Fourth Edition by John Mc Murry) - The book was clean and in good condition. I did not give it 5 stars because the ends were a little bent. 2 stars (Not good.) - The book was described as "in good condition". The cover was broken and taped on. Seller didn't say that. I overpaid. ... 5 stars (A must read) - I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe. I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option. I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background. 2 stars (Technically accurate, boring read) - I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them. 3 stars (This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt) - This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... 5 stars (2nd Edition ISBN # 0393956962 Is Hardcover, Not Cloth) - This is an excellent, perhaps the best, Abnormal Psychology Textbook. You can save over $100 by going with this older edition. It is not too different than the current edition and can easily be updated. Amazon Marketplace is currently offering the 2nd edition as low as 53 cents. This is an outstanding bargain. 4 stars (Organized with interesting case studies. Easy reading.) - The text in paperback form was quite inexpensive. The book was organized into easily digestible chapters with insightful DSM classifications. The chapter on sexual disorders was quite explicit. Our instructor skipped it in lecture. ...
