With today's huge hard drives, which can store millions of files, accessing a particular document on your computer can be a tedious job. 4 stars (Am happy with JumpStart Typing for my 9 year old daughter.) - My daugher has happily substituted the games in JumpStart Typing for the Neopets arcade games she was playing before. The program does a good job at enforcing acquiring new material by having a "team strength bar" that dimishes to zero as you make mistakes while playing; to play more, you have to do some lesson work until it is back up to 100%. It also steadily makes the games harder as you learn more letters and get better. The result is overall quite a bit more work than just playing regular games, but the net is still positive. However, some parental encouragment is needed;our rule is that JumpStart Typing time is unlimited, after homework and other duties have been met, while all other computer use is limited to 90 minutes a week. The other typing programs I looked at woudl all have required a little more parental help and encouragement. A good value. 1 stars (Attention Mac Users!) - This program claims that it works on Mac OS X, but it does not. The company has not responded to our messages, so do not expect tech support if you have problems. We researched the product & system requirements carefully before ordering and are disappointed that we have no idea how the program actually is. Beware of false advertising by JumpStart. 5 stars (Typing for Kids) - I purchased the most recent typing tutorial, JUMP START TYPING, for my daughter, age 8, knowing that she had enjoyed the JUMP START grade school programs, but not sure if she was ready for typing. I was extremely pleased to see her after one sitting, at the keyboard, her hands in the proper position, typing 3 words per minute, and enjoying it. The games are fun, and expections are tailored to each individual's ability. ... 4 stars ( Jumpstart Reading With Karaoke ) - I have a 5 yr old and a 7 yr old who enjoy playing the game. The microphone is a big hit, and works well. Both my boys sang along at least five times when they got their first song on the jukebox. Listening to their voices made both of them really speak up, loud and clear. I was personally amazed that my 5 yr old spoke so clearly into the microphone. I feel the software was nicely made. By the fifth time they ask to complete the activity, I'm feeling like they are going to lose interest but they didnt, and my kids continued on. ... 1 stars (Freezes up my computer.) - My kids loved this program - for about five minutes. Then the computer freezes up. I have a new computer, so it's not a memory issue. We have tried many times. We just can't use this program - and their service people were no help. 1 stars (Didn't work on MacIntosh - Customer Service Terrible) - Given to us as a gift - when we went to start it our Mac (OS X 10.2.8 which booted up Mac Classic 9.2 to start the program) didn't recognize the CD. OK - so we called the customer service number on the box - it's been disconnected. So we went to the JumpStart Website, found the customer service e-mail address and sent an e-mail - 14 days later, still no reply. So we searched the web and found a new customer service number (not an 800 number) and got someone who was polite but didn't understand English very well, and had no advice to offer except to return it with a receipt, but.... it was a gift so we have no receipt. That stumped him. Is this a company that deserves your support? ... 2 stars (Disappointing. Only 1 of 3 discs is Mac OS X compatible!) - The packaging is very deceiving. Only one of the 3 CD's is Mac OS X compatible, Although the other 2 do launch, they launch in OS 9 emulation (classic) mode. OS X has been out for what, 5 years and they haven't upgraded all their software yet! Very disappointing ...
