5 stars (Of Man and the River) - If you thought Hurricane Katrina packed a devastating whallop to the Louisiana and Mississippi Coast, wait until you read this engrossing story of the 1927 Great Mississippi Flood which inundated the entire Misssissippi Delta. Barry does a great job of providing the background for the levee system which has repeatedly failed the Delta because beauracrats were unwilling to bend to any common sense when it came to handling the mighty Mississippi. They insisted on building their levees higher and wider, channeling the river into a raging torrent come high water. The Army Corps of Engineers chose to cling to outdated manuscripts rather than study the situation first hand, which was repeatedly asked for by civil engineers who saw a monumental crisis in the making. Barry makes a good case for Eads' proposal for jetties in deepening the mouth of the Mississippi and creating a greater flow of water into the Gulf of Mexico. While this was done primarily to increase navigation into and from the Port of New Orleans, jetties would have made a lot more sense than a system of levees that essentially served to choke the river. To make matters worse the Corps systematically closed off spillways and refused to cut canals even after the 1922 flood should have served as a warning call. But, Barry treats the rising Mississippi as a metaphorical tool as well, describing Jim Crow South in intimate detail, contrasting the bigoted paternalism of the Percy family with the malignant growth of the Ku Klux Klan, and its impact on Southern politics. It is a well written book that focuses mostly on the Mississippi Delta, the cultural and economic battle for this prized acreage and the river that would ultimately engulf the region. 5 stars (Prophetic and lively read) - John Barry's superb RISING TIDE can be viewed through many prisms, but obviously today, we will all see it through post-Hurricane Katrina eyes. 5 stars (A masterpeice, that reviewers bashed for no reason at all) - First off, before I even talk about my review, lets look back on what so called "Pro" reviewers did to this game. Due to the fact that it did not exactly live up to the massive hype surrounding it, reviewers did their best to destroy it, and anyone who might think of checking it out. I'm here to dispell the myth reviewers created, that this game isn't worth a 5 out of 10, and that it's buggy to no end. Now, lets talk about the good features- - The absolute best soundtrack composed and produced for a video game in years. This is the sort of music you'll be hunting down MP3's for after you play the game. - Action scenes that rival those seen in just about any video game to date, including the awsome Max Payne series. Consider this, you target the enemie, do a flying, spinning leap forward, waste him, then target his buddy, flip midair, land, fly backwards, fire, and then you not only kill the other bad guy, but you blow up scenery, and all heck litterally breaks loose. Thats an example of ANY of the gameplay to be found here. Not even mentioning the Vechicle scenes, and their "Hollywood" style flip a million times and drive fine. Do a 360 while being barraged by missile, and then hit the cliffside doing 80mph, flip 4 times, and drive right at the enemy ship, firing at it, and it explodes the MOMENT you go flying through it. Yep, doesn't get much better then this. - Cinematics that really set the stage, and make you feel like your not playing a game, rather, you are watching a movie that you control. You will actually grasp what is happening, why it's happening, and what to do next. You will also be quite entertained, as like the rest of the game, the cutscenes are hollywood quality. - Top notch voice acting, backing up the characters and storyline, easily on par with KOTOR's or Half Life 2, or even The Longest Journey(10 points if you actually know this game) Ok, so now that I got that out of t... 5 stars (A Must Read for those in the Non-Profit Sector) - As a businessperson with an MBA, I readily identified with and agreed with the advice and strategies presented in this book. For people with a passion to help improve things in a not-so-perfect world, this book is a gift. It provides real life examples and turns theories into step-by-step directions. Each chapter makes good use of subheads and bullet points and ends with a concise summary. The authors have real-life experience working as social entreprenuers and it shows.
