5 stars (Superb tour guide with sermons of biblical locations) - As he did with the prequel WALKING THE BIBLE: A JOURNEY BY LAND THROUGH THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES, Bruce Feiler combines a tour guide of biblical locations with intriguing annotations and "sermons" lifted from ancient times but also includes modern events. WHERE GOD WAS BORN: A JOURNEY BY LAND TO THE ROOTS OF RELIGION starts with Joshua and continues on through to the Babylonian captivity and the Diaspora written by a fine author who describes what he observes first hand. Well written with incredible insight somewhat thanks to archeological companion Avner Goren, readers will appreciate this fabulous journey that goes way beyond just Israel's' borders as the author finds greatness in the non-Jewish Semite cultures of the region as much as he embraces being a Jew. Because he and Mr. Goren are not armchair travelers, but instead visit the locales described, this superb reference work and his previous excellent nonfictions are inspirational for us religious moderates who believe in tolerance for all; suicidal extremists or intelligent designers who share in common their faith is the divine one need to pass as these groups will reinterpret the simple underlying moral message of Mr. Feiler's strong belief in the words of the bible. 1 stars (Filth) - My wife and I are both redheads, so we were really looking forward to reading this book. It is absolutely terrible. It is vulgar, anti Christian with no redeeming qualities. My wife could not even finish it. I read the whole thing hoping that it would get better. It did not. I sure hope that it never makes the library. 1 stars (Poorly written) - I found a number of inaccuracies in this book, causing me to wonder about the veracity of other information presented. I was at the Witch Camp mentioned in the book; the author not only had several facts wrong, she cited two different numbers for total attendance; each figure was incorrect, but I was amazed that an editor didn't catch the inconsistency of her inaccuracies. In her stretch to use "fresh" language, she sometimes completely ignored the meanings of words. While using "hair" terms, such as "braided" cleverly, the impact was dulled by redundancy. The book contains many loose ends. For instance, she has heard that witches are often red-headed and goes to witch camp to check on this - yet she never tells us how many - if any - red heads were there. On the other hand, she claims that there were a preponderance of witches named Lilith - personally, I know of only two by that name in attendance then. She claims that the Vikings were red headed. While this may be so, the more common assumption is that Vikings were blond; Eric the Red was so-called because of his unusual and therefore distinguishing coloring. Perhaps an editor could have salvaged this book; as it is, it's a carelessly written bit of nonsense. 4 stars (Currently reading . . .) - Having a blast reading this book right now. As a red head I remember the taunts and I can identify with nearly everything so far. The only thing I am curious about is the sect of wicca that does this witch camp. 4 stars (A deeply moving meditation on hope and despair) - Elie Wiesel's THE TIME OF THE UPROOTED shouldn't work. With its sudden shifts in point of view, disturbingly eloquent children, truncated storylines and generally convoluted, if scanty, plot, the book should be a disappointment. But the Nobel Prize winner's meditation on despair and hope in the face of both the unthinkable and the mundane is deeply moving. Wiesel (and his translator, David Hapgood) skillfully controls the mood of the work, immersing the reader in the sadness of Gamaliel Friedman, a man whose life has been a series of struggles. A childhood spent in hiding from the Nazis and an adulthood spent in unhappy romances have left Gamaliel irreparably harmed. Spiritual issues are pervasive in this book. A ghostwriter, Gamaliel is at work on a story of his own centered on a conflict between a rabbi and a priest. He is also enamored of a rabbi seeking to force the arrival of the Messiah. And he is preoccupied with a woman, near death, who he imagines might be the woman who protected him as a child. Each interlocking piece of his life adds heft to the book's spiritual themes. Gamaliel's relationships with women, central to the story, are almost cursorily described. Each seems a rich vein of material that Wiesel barely mines. Indeed, the same could be said of many of the plot points. THE TIME OF THE UPROOTED often feels like a slimmed down version of a potentially more ornately layered tale. Unfortunately webrrot feels no need to stand by its current marketing claims of: Free Software Updates Spy Sweeper is continuously updated to provide you with the most advanced and effective spyware protection. As a Spy Sweeper customer, you receive these updates to our software absolutely FREE. This is simply not the case they have now instituted an anual subscription update fee like the big boys. When I addressed this with them on the phone they suggested I take it up with the vendor "Fry's Electronics" they should have warned you. Our issues are concern over the future marketing claims made by this manufacturer. They will also say you should have read the small print... We guess their interpritation of free and the rest of the world's is a little different. Who knows what they will decide in the future. We are seriously disappointed in webroot. 1 stars (This product can lock up your computer) - Upon installing a store bought copy of this program, my computer locked up. I contacted the tech service and they said it was not uncommon and I should uninstall and then go to a website to download. I did this and the same thing happened. Lock up occured during boot up and I had a difficult time just to get to access the uninstall function. The company admitted that this occassionally happens, but would not refund my money. I bought this product as added insurance to computer penetration and have refused to disable the other software I had emplaced in attempts to see if their software would subsequently work. 5 stars (The best out there) - Granted, one may not need all of the utilities (I use gmail which has great spam controls), but the spy sweeper and windows washer utilities are the best that I have found. I find my computer much safer with them. And windows washer cleans out blank space. I also like that the newest version works much faster than previous versions. A must to protect your PC. 4 stars (I've only used 2 parts) - The Spy Sweeper and Window Washer portions seem pretty good. You can fine-tune them to do or not do particular things, and can schedule tasks to occur at specific times. The basic function of Window Washer is to remove the "obvious" lists of file names and user names that get stored by various programs, such as the "Recently Opened" list, the history list of URL's in a browser, as well as the obscure portions Windows itself, such in error message logs, temp files, and other locations. There are about 30 spots it can clean for you, including the "slack" space in clusters. "Slack" is the left-over portion of a previous file that has been over-written. For true paranoics, there is an optional "bleach" cycle that will overwrite the slack up to 39 times. It also cleans out cookies, but you can have it leave specific ones you really need. Spy Sweeper functions like an anti-virus program and looks for ad-ware, key-stroke, and other "spy" type files on your computer. It is very customizable. If you have Window Washer or Spy Sweeper do "everything", expect it to take a pretty long time - perhaps you'll want to run it overnight... As IE offers anti-pop up and anti-spam features, I have not installed those two portions of the software, but they might prove useful to some people. ... 5 stars (Kick Ass Software!) - Beats the spyware detection and removal software from McAfee, Microsoft, Norton, and even Trend Micro by far! I previously had spyware detection and removal software by latter two of the above mentioned companies, and thought that I was clear of spyware. I did not know that there was a key-logging spyware and about nine tracking cookies on my computer, all along, until I installed Webroot's Spy Sweeper v4. Webroot's Spy Sweeper did not take long to detect the malware and presented me an option to remove it. Spy Sweeper's user interface is friendly and easy to configure, for a systematic person with a good basic awareness about Windows and internet terms such as web-browser, cookies, and favorites. The software help documentation contained with the program is also very helpful in explaining the options. During installation, at the user's selection, Spy Sweeper also adds a "Run a sweep" option to the explorer menu, which lets the user to simply right-click on a folder and click the selection to scan its contents for spyware. Its scans in realtime, and its scheduled scans are quite customizable. It automatically updates regularly itself by default. One of my favorite features is a text area in its program screen that shows a detailed log of the performed operations, which allows the user to track its operations, past and current. All these wonderful features, and yet, it does not slow my 1.3GHz (100MHz bus) computer running Windows 2000 with 244MBytes of SDRAM, unlike the other spyware detection software that I have used.
